GOA – The land of high spirits
A Glimpse
Goa may be the smallest Indian state, but it is the richest. Having spent 4 centuries under the Portuguese rule, Goa was the first Indian state to establish an English medium school, a medical school & the first printing press machine was installed here! It also houses Asia's first and only Naval Aviation Museum housing the vintage Indian jet trainers, helicopters, and aircraft. But despite many achievements, the state has a chill, hippie feels to it that instantly puts you in a holiday mood.
What to expect
When you’re in Goa, expect to run into two-wheeler taxis that are run by bike riders who commute you from one town to another in exchange for a paid fare. Also, you will run into thousands of bars selling exotic concoctions day in and day out. You will encounter an endless stretch of sandy beach to lounge on, and numerous churches with distinct Portuguese architecture. The state comes alive during the Christmas-New Year period with endless music fests & casino fests. Goa is 30% forested and houses some of the most relaxing forests surrounded by sweet water lakes that don’t turn brackish despite being connected to the ocean.
Culinary Encounters
Being near the ocean, trying out the Goan Fish & Prawn Curry is inevitable. But also don't miss out on "Bebinca", a layered cake prepared with coconut milk, eggs, butter & jaggery. Pork Vindaloo made with cumin and red masala is a delicacy. Chicken Xacuti is a slow cooked chicken dish best eaten with steamed rice. Chicken Cafreal is a Portuguese dish where chicken is marinated in spice paste & vinegar until tender. During Diwali, sweet flour pockets called Karanji is made, stuffed with coconut, cardamom, almonds, and sugar.
